Organize Computer Software

One of the major costs of reloading a computer or replacing a computer can be software.

  • Do you have all the software you need to reload your computer if the hard drive needed to be replaced?
  • Is there software that you own that you want to use on your new computer?
  • Did you create a system restoration disk* for your computer?

Gather all the software media that you have laying around the house or office and put it into a card box and High Tech House Calls will sort through it all:

  • Out of date software will be thrown out.
  • Software for your current computers will be grouped together and tagged for what computers they are for.
  • Software that is "missing" will be documented. Typically software that is "missing", is software you downloaded or software that you renewed online.
  • Another type of "missing" software are backup media you should have made when the new computer was installed referred to as system restoration media*.

Knowing what software can be used on other computers, can prevent you from buying the same software again for a new computer. Documenting "missing" software can give you a chance to search through your emails for online purchases you made. Backup media that you should have made such as system restore media* can be made while your system is still functioning.

*System Restoration Media: In order to cut costs, many computer manufacturers will not create DVD's that you would use to restore your computer in the event of a virus attack or hard drive failure. Typically, a procedure must be run  by the new computer owner to create a 1 to 3 DVD set of disks that can be used to restore your computer to the factory default. If you didn't make these DVD's when you acquired your new computer, in the event of a re-load, you would need to buy another Operating System License to obtain installation media. The cost of this license can range from $150 on up.
